Took the Passat to the shop, rear brakes developed a noise.

Kinja'd!!!

VW quoted me $280 for the rear pads and install, my indie mechanic $155.

Still 5k km left on the rear pads apparently but I will change them anyway. They still can’t figure out why the front suspension makes noise on bumpy roads/Belgian pavé, mystery still as all the bushings seem fine.

My brake discs have been replaced due to warping 3 times in 35k miles.

You’re not alone.

word to the wise, its very likely the discs are not the problem, but the symptom of crappy pads leaving deposits.

They replaced them under warranty during oil changes.

I had no idea they were actually warped. They were warped. The head VW mechanic at my dealer told me so himself.

Why did we buy a Passat?

B7 Passat? Well even the B6 shares the same front 1K0411315R sway links, and they are well known for failing. Go after the MK7 Golf links though! They are much much cheaper and the same sway link 5Q0411315A. ...then if your paying to have your brakes done, totally do the rotors too, it should add no extra labor and your pads will last longer.

I was quoted $800 to do the rear on my a4. Ordered pads and rotors that night to DIY

$800 seems a bit excessive, I’m guessing our cars probably share the same pads since they share most of the suspension. Did you need rotors too?

Yep, B7 Passat Wagon.

If they are indeed the culprits I’ll try to find Golf Links and PU sway bar bushings.

Non-serviceable sway bushings on that one. Only the links.

It’s appealing in theory, but not in practice.

On paper, it’s great. In real life, I hate it.

If its a 2.5, I’ll gladly take it off your hands hehe. CBUA, and the CBTA are honestly the best engines for those. But that’s only if you choose reliability over power and speed.

Well, I hope the sway bar bushings are fine.

I don’t really hate it, the 2.0 TSi is a great little engine and the DSG works wonderfully on the road.

But yeah, I wish I had bought that X5

2.0 TSi mated to the DSG6

Non serviceable bushings? WTF yo? Wonder how that works? I had a cts-v that I couldn’t source new sway bushing for back a few years ago so I resorted to installing a 1" copper shim in between the rubber and the bar. I used a copper union that had the same I. D. As the bar and cut it in half with a little key notch so it would slide apart, unbolted the sway bushing clamps and slide the shims in, retightened the clamps and no more clunk. We also just fixed a clunk in a grand caravan with sway bushings. They didn’t look bad, but evidently it was enough to make noise. So that’s my guess, if you’ve exhausted all other sources. Good luck.

I guess if they fail, you replace the whole sway bar? Much like many non-serviceable control arm bushings. You replace the control arm.

Do you have an electronic e brake? If so, you’ll need a vag-com type tool to release it, but there may be a workaround?

Huh, just picked the car up.

Everything is working fine, they probably have the tool.

Yep, need new rotors too. But still, I almost spit out my drink when I saw that quote
